MCP is determined to wrestle power from DPP while the DPP is also even more determined to keep hold of the treasure of power come May 2019.These two political nemesis will do anything & even if it means everything to step into the promised land.
This far, both can smell victory but MCP seems so confident of the two perhaps they are buoyed up by the 5-1 victory and the many by-elections the MCP has won over the ruling party across the country.
One interesting thing though that has cropped up in recent months has been the possible pairing on the elections. For MCP,it seems now that it is a foregone conclusion that Mia is a preferred running mate for Dr Laz.
The good thing about MCP’s clear indication in as far as this issue is concerned is that, Malawians have had enough time to debate on it & all the talk about the dilemma which Dr Chakwera may have had is now simmering down. I think APM is even in more dilemma now.
The rumour mills have emerged in the recent weeks that the big man has three names in his plate to consider & he must eventually settle for one Soulos Chilima, Atupele Muluzi & Bright Msaka are the names that have cropped up, but the very same rumour mill further says that the pendulum seems to be
swinging in favour of Msaka.
This Is where the dilemma comes in. It will be suicidal if indeed APM would eventually settle for Msaka.Lets face it,Chilima & Muluzi have an established following in this country which can add some numbers to their ticket if picked, doubt if Msaka has the same pedigree. But in the event that he chooses Atupele,he also risks losing some support in the process.
The dilemma will weigh heavily on him. And what about the noise that MCP has sidelined the north for snubbing Msowoya? Well, Dpp itself has never had a RUNNINGMATE from the north. Never in history.
Even their political bedfellows, UDF, has never featured a RUNNINGMATE from the north. But MCP has considered the north not once but thrice. 1999, 2004, 2014. Only once has it looked elsewhere since Kamuzu. And this speaks volumes of which party will command a following in the north.
